CESAR

ORELLANA

"The Harvey Mudd Engineering Department is where I spend a lot of my time. Oftentimes, it seems like everyone knows what's going on and I'm sitting there not aware of things.

As a first-generation college student and the child of immigrants, I didn't really know anyone who knew anything about the whole college process. I figured it out all by myself.

I feel like I'm doing the exact same thing now. This college is a system that I don't really know how to navigate. I'm just kind of feeling my way around, stumbling around.

In the Engineering Department, there are so few people that I can connect with about the experiences that are tied to parts of my identity. There are also very few faculty of color in Engineering.

The department is aware of these issues and they're trying to fix it. They just don't know how."
